AAR Wine Laboratory offers alcohol by volume (ABV) by GC (Gas Chromatography). GC is the preferred technique used by the TTB to verify alcohol content by the 2004-1 ruling.
Currently there are other options for analysis of alcohol that include Near-IR (the most widely used instrument) typically called an alcolyzer. Recent studies and investigations have raised some concerns about matrix interferences with this technique, causing erroneous results. With AAR's GC method (ASBC 4-D), separation allows the removal of Near-IR interfering compounds (such as sugars) found in wine.
